Soldier To Receive Medal of Honor

President Obama will present Army Staff Sgt. Clinton L. Romesha the Medal of Honor for heroism he displayed in Afghanistan in October 2009. Romesha will become the fourth living service member to receive the nation’s highest award for valor in combat for combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The ceremony will take place Feb. 11 at the White House. According to the citation, Romesha took part in an effort to fend off roughly 300 enemy fighters that threatened to overrun his unit’s position. Despite receiving shrapnel wounds, Romesha directed air support against Taliban attackers, provided cover fire to enable the rescue of three wounded comrades, and faced enemy fire to save several others. He was attached to Bravo Troop, part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division. Because of his efforts, troops from Bravo Troop, 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment regrouped and repelled the attackers. Romesha left the Army in April 2011 and now lives in Minot, N.D., with his wife and three children.
