Somber Anniversary Marked

Military and civilian employees alike at Washington Navy Yard paused Sept. 16, to remember the colleagues who died during an attack by a gunman one year earlier. More than 2,000 workers there listened while Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Jonathan Greenert and Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus delivered remarks. “We know that their lives are defined not for how they died, but for how they lived,” Mabus said of the victims. Twelve persons died and three more were wounded when a result of the shooting rampage of Aaron Alexis, a civilian contractor. Military law-enforcement agents eventually killed Alexis.
