Some VA Prostate Biopsy Tools Possibly Infected

Certain veterans who were given prostate biopsies at Veterans Affairs medical facilities between 1997 and 2001 may face a small risk of having been exposed to Hepatitis B., Hepatitis C and the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), says the VA. VA inspectors found that, although the equipment used for the biopsies was cleaned and disinfected after each use, some were not scrubbed by a brush, which created the possibility of infection. The possible exposure occurred at the following facilities: District of Columbia; Iowa City, Iowa; Togus, Maine; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Fort Harrison and Miles City, Montana; Las Vegas, Nevada; Buffalo and Canandaigua, New York; Cincinnati, Ohio; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; Portland, Oregon; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Memphis, Murfreesboro and Nashville, Tennessee; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Although the VA has no reports of infected patients, it is notifying all veterans who were treated with the equipment at those locations.
