The Navy will name the fifth Virginia-class attack submarine Massachusetts, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced Nov. 8. Like others in its class, Massachusetts will be capable of conducting stealth operations, launching cruise missiles at targets ashore, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, mine delivery, and minefield mapping operations. Huntington Ingalls Newport News Shipbuilding in Virginia and General Dynamics Electric Boat in Connecticut will build Massachusetts, under a joint agreement.
