Effective Dec. 31, U.S. service members serving in Turkey will no longer be exempt from federal income taxes. This resulted by officials terminating Turkey’s certification as an area in direct support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. The decision does not affect imminent danger pay of $225 a month for troops serving in Turkey. The combat-zone tax exclusion benefit, when in effect, is provided in one-month blocks. A member serving one day in an area identified on the combat-zone tax exclusion list is exempt from federal taxes for that entire month. Most qualified members see the difference by a reimbursement of income tax withheld when filing their income tax returns at the end of the year.
