‘Throwbots’ To Debut in Combat Theaters

The Army and Marine Corps will soon equip units with lightweight robots that individual soldiers and Marines can throw into potentially dangerous areas. The so-called “throwbots,” in turn, will provide users with data supplied by on-board cameras and other surveillance devices. “These robots can provide dismounted troops that extra bit of stand-off distance,: said Lt. Col. Dave Thompson, project manager of the Marine Corps Robotic Systems Joint Project Office. Infantry, combat engineer and explosive ordnance disposal troops will be among those getting the robots, which typically weigh no more than a few pounds each. Services’ officials believe they will be particularly useful in detecting improvised explosive devices.
