Transgender Policy Relaxed

Transgender service members no longer will be discharged automatically. Defense Secretary Ash Carter issued a directive July 13 that called for an end to such administrative discharges, for persons diagnosed with gender dysphoria, effective immediately. Carter further called for the establishment of a working group to study the effects transgender service members have on readiness. The panel will proceed, Carter said, with the assumption that those with gender dysphoria can serve without adverse impact on military effectiveness.
