Transition Health Screening Sought

Each service member would receive a complete medical examination from military doctors, including mental-health screening, when they leave the military, under a pending amendment to the 2014 defense-spending bill. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. introduced the amendment in late November, keeping a promise he made to veterans during a meeting in his home state earlier this year. During the meeting, the veterans expressed anguish with difficulties they encountered when they sought treatment from the Department of Veterans Affairs for service-related health issues. Full examinations are available now for departing service members on a voluntary basis. Rockefeller’s amendment would make them mandatory.
