Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stuck to his words, in which he stated that Sen. John McCain was a “loser” because he was “captured” during the Vietnam War. McCain responded by distancing himself from the remarks, but called for Trump to apologize to all veterans who served honorably. Meanwhile, the Republican party took steps to distance itself from Trump’s remarks. “Senator McCain is an American hero because he served his country and sacrificed more than most can imagine. Period. There is no place in our party or our country for comments that disparage those who have served honorably,” Republican National Committee spokesman Sean Spice said in a July 18 statement.
