Unmanned Helo Delivers Supplies to Marines

In a step that ultimately could reduce the threat unmanned explosive devices (IEDs) poses upon supply convoys, a new unmanned helicopter delivered supplies to a Marine landing-support unit in Helmand province, Afghanistan. The May 22 mission, performed by a Kaman K1200 K-MAX helicopter, was the first of its kind. The unmanned aircraft has been in use by loggers in the Pacific Northwest for several years, but still is undergoing tests for military purposes by the Marine Corps. The first night of the Helmand mission, the members of Marine Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Squadron moved almost 6,000 pounds of gear to units in forward positions. They were assisted on the ground by members of Combat Logistics Battalion 5.
