Untethered Blimp Incident Fosters Repercussions

The Defense Department is suspending the blimp-borne missile-defense system tagged as the culprit in the incident in which an observation blimp broke free from its tether Oct. 28, Tribune News Service reported. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) reported that the JLENS (Joint Land Attack Cruise Missile Defense Elevated Netted Sensor System) aerostat came loose during a test at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., and drifted freely until it alit in a remote area of northeast Pennsylvania. The cause of the incident is under investigation.
