An Aug. 20 pillow fight among first-year cadets in an outdoor quad area at the U.S. Military Academy resulted in some 30 injuries. According to several news reports, the pillow fight – intended to foster camaraderie among the new cadets – turned ugly when some participants chose to use what amounted to makeshift large blackjack-style weapons out of their pillowcases by stuffing them with hard objects. A five-minute video of the incident that was posted on YouTube showed what appeared to be a good-natured but raucous melee. Halfway through the video, an observer could be heard asking, “Did somebody get knocked out or something?” The video did not show anyone being hurt. However, the New York Daily News reported that postings on social media described numerous injuries – including broken teeth, at least one broken nose, and several concussions.
