Officials from the United Services Military Apprenticeship Program (USMAP) briefed Sailors from various commands at Naval Station Norfolk’s chapel April 5. Created in 1976 as the Navy National Apprenticeship Program, USMAP became multi-service and was later recognized by the Secretary of Labor, who signed the National Standards of Apprenticeship April 11, 2000. USMAP members receive documented proof of their military work experience and recognition of skills learned from their job, at no charge and without working during off-duty hours. Applicants must be on active-duty; possess a high school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma, be assigned to an authorized apprenticeship trade billet as a primary job, and have sufficient time to complete the program while on active duty.
