The United States Mint initially will offer the new Marine Corps 230th Anniversary Silver Dollars for a limited time. According to the web site at www.usmint.gov, the commemoratives can be purchased on line commencing July 20 and will be shipped to the buyer’s specified address. Once the coins are sold out, they will be available from coin dealers at market price. The Marine Corps silver dollar represents the first time the United States has honored a branch of the service with a commemorative coin. The obverse side of the coin features the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima from the famous photograph by Joe Rosenthal during World War II. The reverse side has the Marine Corps eagle, globe and anchor emblem and motto, “Semper Fidelis” – Latin for “always faithful.”
