Agencies are required to submit freedom of information act program reviews and improvement plans to the Office of Management and Budget and Department of Justice, as well as post them to their websites by June 14, according to OMB memo M-06-12.
The memo follows up on an executive order issued last year on improving agency disclosure of information as well as another OMB memo on implementing the order summarizing its requirements and highlighting upcoming deadlines for agency action.
The order requires agencies to review FOIA operations and prepare improvement plans that include “concrete milestones, with specific timetables and outcomes to be achieved”
by the agency in fiscal years 2006 and 2007.
The plans must include “specific activities that the agency will implement to eliminate or reduce the agency’s FOIA backlog,” OMB said.
