Air Force families who wish to adopt children could qualify for financial help amounting to as much as $2,000 per adoptive child, with an annual reimbursement limit of $5,000, under the service’s Adoption Expense Reimbursement Program. To qualify, adoptions must be finalized while active-duty airmen are still serving continuously, or full-time Air Guard or reservists are serving on orders for at least 180 days. Adopted children must be under 18 years of age, cannot take care of themselves, and cannot be biological offspring or stepchildren of the adoptive parents. Also, adoptions must be arranged through qualified adoption agencies. Airmen can request the reimbursement within 365 days of the final adoption decree.
