Airmen, guardians and their families could see improved access to good dormitories and childcare facilities in the coming years though a $1.6 billion budget allocated toward refurbishment, new construction and enhancements.
The Air Force Installation and Mission Support Center’s Civil Engineer Center (AFCEC) is managing the projects at 61 locations, which are expected to be completed by Sept. 30, 2027 when that fiscal year ends.
Included are:
• Funding upgrades, renovations and improved designs for 170 permanent-party dormitory projects at Air Force and Space Force facilities, through 2027. Four such projects are ongoing now, at a cost of more than $76 million.
• Funding 14 large-scale renovations sometime in the next fiscal year (Sept. 30, 2023-Oct. 1, 2024), at a cost of $227 million. Construction is taking place at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, Texas, Travis Air Force Base, California, and Vance Air Force Base, Oklahoma.
• Planning and design of 19 child development centers, at a cost of $205 million, between now and the end of fiscal 2027. Projects at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland and Sheppard Air Force bases in Texas, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, and Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, are being given priority.
• Constructing a new dormitory at Clear Space Force Station, Alaska, in collaboration with the Army Corps of Engineers. The $67-million project will result in a state-of-the-art facility that would accommodate 84 non-commissioned and senior non-commissioned officers. Multi-use spaces – day and laundry rooms – will be included.
“Funding for these quality-of-life programs will accelerate delivery of safe and modern spaces airmen and guardians can thrive in, in addition to improving access to childcare programs,” said Col. George Nichols, deputy director of AFCEC’s facility engineering directorate. “We’ll be able to move ahead with a lot of improvements to provide affordable childcare facilities and comfortable dwellings warfighters can call home.”
