The Air Force is making another stab at retaining its pilots and air crews. Eligible active-duty aviators are being offered a bonus under the Fiscal Year 2023 Legacy AvB Program, which would increase the monetary cap from $35,000 to $50,000 annually as compared to previous offers.
“Reliable personnel forecasts allow the Air Force to continue executing the warfighting mission,” said Maj. Gen. Albert Miller, Air Force Training and Readiness Director. “Our experienced aviators are uniquely qualified to succeed in a combat environment and these incentives are necessary to maintain that talent and competitiveness with our pacing challenge.”
Aviators who hold an undergraduate flying training active duty service commitment that expires before Oct. 1 or sooner can apply. Those aviators who already have an aviation bonus contract in effect will not be able to apply for the higher amount this year.
Aside from the aviation bonus change, the Air Force is executing a Rated Officer Retention Demonstration Program. Under it, active-duty manned pilots with no more than three years but no less than one year remaining can sign a contract for the maximum monetary amount one to two years before the fiscal year their UFT ADSC (undergraduate flying training active duty service commitment) expires.
In announcing the bonus plan, the Air Force noted that the maximum contract amount of $50,000 per year offered under this year’s legacy program will not be offered in 2024. “Instead, the maximum contract amount will only be offered under the demonstration program,” the service stated.
