Gen. David W. Allvin was confirmed by the Senate as the next Air Force chief of staff, by a 95-1 vote. He succeeds Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., who now serves as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“It is truly an honor to be confirmed as the 23rd Chief of Staff of the Air Force. My wife Gina and I are humbled by this opportunity, and we are eager to continue to serve our Air Force, our airmen, and their families,” Allvin said upon learning he had been confirmed as the service’s top uniformed officer.

During his confirmation hearing before the Senate in September, Allvin gave lawmakers a glimpse of his vision for the service.

“In today’s dynamic environment, our service faces both significant challenges and tremendous opportunities – the world’s greatest Air Force will meet them head-on just as innovative airmen have done for generations,” Allvin said during the hearing.

Allvin graduated from the Air Force Academy in 1986 and accumulated more than 4,600 hours as a combat pilot in more than 30 aircraft. He accumulated 800 test-flight hours and another 100 hours as a combat pilot. Squadron- and wing-level commands during his 37-year career include the 97th Air Mobility Wing and the 618th Air and Space Operations Center. He also served as commanding general for the NATO Air Training Command, the Afghanistan and NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan and the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing.

Coming to his latest position from his immediately prior stint as the Air Force vice chief of staff, Allvin also served as director for Strategy and Policy for Headquarters U.S. European Command and director for Strategy, Plans and Policy, Joint Staff.
