Continuing expansion at Arlington National Cemetery will ensure that burials and inurnments will take place there for another 50 years, the Army announced Jan. 24. Recent expansions include the area once occupied by the Navy Annex, which is in the process of being torn down. Between 1968 and 1975, the cemetery gradually assumed control over land that once was part of the southern portion of Fort Myer, Va. This former so-called South Post is now Section 60 of the cemetery, where victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attack on the Pentagon and casualties of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are buried. The 624-acre cemetery is marking its 150th anniversary this year.
