The Army continues to work to improve the quality of life for soldiers, the senior-most enlisted leader told a panel on Capitol Hill.
“We’re committed to supporting those soldiers and their families, building cohesive teams across the Army and ensuring that we are fostering a safe and professional climate,” Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer told members of the House Appropriations subcommittee on military construction, veterans affairs and related agencies during a March 20 hearing, as reported by the Association for the U.S. Army (AUSA). “This starts by building quality of life on multiple fronts.”
Weimer told the panel that the service is considering hiring civilians to manage barracks, thus relieving soldiers from related collateral responsibilities. The AUSA story noted that the service has invested some $3 billion for family and privatized housing among 50 installations. Some of the funds have been used to streamline the hiring process at childcare centers and increase enlistment bonuses.
Weimer also noted that plans are afoot to hire 11 data scientists, who would work to assess ways to provide better protocols for mitigating sexual assault and harassment.
Mental-health issues also are garnering significant attention and resources, Weimer said.
“What we’re looking into is ow we can use regional hubs where we mobilize and we train … sleep specialists, physical therapists and nutritionists,” he said. The focus here would be to foster and promote holistic health.
“Our Army has made some improvements over the last year, and we will continue to focus on the priority effort going forward,” Weimer said.
