Austin III announced the establishment of the Atomic Veterans Commemorative Service Medal, to honor those in uniform during the formative and developmental days of the nation’s atomic and nuclear weapons program. Criteria include:
• Direct participation in the detonation of an atomic weapon or device.
• Direct participation in cleanup of radioactive material that resulted from atmospheric detonation.
• Direct participation in cleanup of radioactive material as a result of an accident.
• Exposure to ionizing radiation that resulted from the use of atomic weapons during World War II.
The director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) is handling distribution of the medals to living veterans and next of kin of those who are deceased. The agency will set up a plan for eligible veterans and families to apply online for the medals in the near future.
