Basic allowance for housing rates are going up 12.1 percent on average for 2023, the Pentagon has announced, reflecting variable housing market conditions throughout the US, including Alaska and Hawaii. Factored in are rent, utilities, different housing profiles and pay grades – both with and without dependents, and are compared to civilian housing choices for comparable income groups.
The new rates are only marginally different than the automatic temporary ones announced October 1, 2022 for various areas, which will expire December 31, 2022 and be replaced with the new ones.
According to DoD, the BAH rates “continue the member cost-sharing element at five percent of the national average housing cost by pay grade” and range from $82 to $184 monthly for the 2023 rates. Once set, rates are fixed and won’t drop if market conditions become more favorable, for example.
