Same-sex partners will become eligible to share benefits, Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta announced Feb. 11. “It is a matter of fundamental equity that we provide similar benefits to all of those men and women in uniform who serve their country,” Panetta said. Full implementation will hinge upon conforming with the Defense of Marriage Act, Panetta said. The law defines benefits that can be shared by spouses.
