Gen. David H. Berger succeeded Gen. Robert B. Neller as commandant of the Marine Corps during a July 11 ceremony at the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. Berger, of Woodbine, Md., previously as commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command. During his 38-year career, Berger also commanded troops in Operations Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and Secure Tomorrow.
“This is a special generation of Marines and sailors, and I am quite confident that we will continue to be the force the nation needs us to be,” Berger said as he assumed his new job.
Neller is retiring after serving as commandant since 2015.
“Thanks to all Marines, sailors and their families that I have had the honor and privilege to serve with. Your efforts and sacrifices as warfighters and citizens make the nation proud,” he said to the audience at the change-of-command ceremony.
