The Army and Air Force want to know if diets supplemented with more Vitamin D and calcium could reduce the incidence of stress fractures and musculoskeletal injuries. Scientists from the U.S. Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine and the Trainee Health Surveillance Flight 559th Medical Group’s Basic Military Training Team have joined together to follow up on related Navy and Air Force studies, which showed that the Vitamin D and calcium supplements could reduce stress fractures by as much as 20 percent. The team will use facilities at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland to assess the data they collect.
