The Marine Corps must change to counter emerging threats, its senior-most officer believes. Speaking before an audience at an event by The Heritage Foundation, the Washington-based conservative think tank, Commandant of the Marine Corps Gen. David H. Berger said the emergence of threats from “great powers” requires “that the services need to change to meet the challenges of the new world,” Seapower magazine reported. For the Marine Corps’ part, Berger said the service must evolve to become a part of an “integrated naval force.”
Equipment, training regimen, organization, warfighting concepts, and leadership-selection process may not suffice, Berger said. If need be, Berger said, he would be willing to see the service’s overall strength decrease a bit in order to redirect money toward necessary modernization of equipment.
