Japanese fishermen are seeking $837,000 in compensation from the Air Force and Japanese government, following a February incident in which an F-16 fighter dropped fuel tanks into waters they depend upon for their livelihoods. Stars and Stripes reported Sept. 4 that the pilot dropped the tanks and landed safely at Misawa Air Base, Japan, in response to an engine fire. The plane landed safely and there were no injuries. However, fishing in the waters where the tanks landed was suspended, during their peak shellfish season. U.S. and Japanese officials tested the waters for contamination in March and found none, Stars and Stripes reported. The tests are ongoing.
