In the latest step to remove Confederate names from US military installations, Fort Hood, Texas, has been renamed Fort Cavazos. The new name honors Gen. Richard Cavazos, the first Latino Army four-star general. Born in Kingsville, Texas, in 1929, he earned a Distinguished Service Cross medal during the Korean War. He died in 2017.

The Army, state and community that surrounds the post, bracketed by the cities of Killeen and Copperas Cove, have taken steps to ensure the name transition will be as seamless as possible. This includes changing more than 400 signs around the post. To date, the local government has made no decision on renaming Fort Hood Street or Killeen-Fort Hood Regional Airport.

Kimberly A. Pugh of the post’s Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center is assuring soldiers and their families that they need not worry about changing birth certificates of children born at the facility – the state of Texas automatically takes care of such updates. Likewise, they won’t have to worry about address changes. The U.S. Postal Service has already made the appropriate updates.

The installation’s previous namesake, John Bell Hood, is most famous for directing the attack on Union positions at Devils Den and Little Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg during the Civil War.
