Service members’ quality-of-life issues will take center stage on Capitol Hill, thanks to the House Armed Services Committee’s decision to move forward with the establishment of a bi-partisan Quality of Life Panel. Both Reps. Mike Rogers, R.-Alabama, and Adam Smith, D.-Washington, are spearheading the initiative. Rogers chairs the committee’s personnel subcommittee; Smith is the subcommittee’s ranking member.

“There is absolutely no reason why any service member should have to worry about food or unsafe housing. I have no doubt that the hard work of this panel will lead to much-needed improvements across the Department of Defense to ensure that the needs of our service members and their families are fulfilled,” Rogers said.

“Ensuring they get the resources, services and recognition they need and deserve must be a top priority for us as members of Congress,” Smith added.

Both Rogers and Smith added that results of the panel’s work would be reflected in provisions of future defense-spending bills.
