A Marine guard stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C.’s main gate died of a gunshot wound April 9, the service announced. The Marine Corps provided no specific reasons why Lance Cpl. Mark N. Boterf, 21, of Crowley, Texas, died. Subsequent media reports, however, indicated Boterf’s shooting was accidental. Boterf was assigned to 2nd Radio Battalion, II Marine Expeditionary Force Headquarters Group at Lejeune. In his capacity as a sentry Boterf was assigned to Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.
