Defense Secretary James N. Mattis outlined his plan to quickly bolster the armed forces, placing them in a position to meet future objectives as well. The agenda would improve readiness, address shortfalls, and build a more capable force, Seapower Magazine reported Feb. 1. Details of the changes Mattis proposes would emerge in the next two budgets the Trump administration sends to Capitol Hill. An amended 2017 budget would address immediate war-fighting needs. Mattis’ request should reach the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) by March 1. The proposed 2018 budget proposal would include plans to address shortfalls and readiness issues, Seapower reported. The request should get to OMB by May 1.
