Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy (SW/FMF) Joe Campa has recommended that Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Mullen drop the college degree requirement for chief petty officers, according to deck-plate sources. Currently, chiefs to be considered by the April 2010 senior chief selection board must have completed an associate degree by Oct. 1, 2009. Last fall Campa said he was taking a look at the policy in view of the requirements for surge deployments and individual augmentee duty. Adm. Mullen is expected to act on the recommendation soon, although neither he nor Campa have commented on the issue.
