Parental leave has changed with the start of the new year. Service members who give birth, are non-birth parents, and who adopt a child are now authorized 12 weeks’ parental leave following the child’s birth, adoption or entry into the family from foster care.

In each case, parents are authorized to take full advantage of the Pentagon’s Military Parent Leave Policy (MPLP).

“It is important for the development of military families that members be able to care for their newborn, adopted, or placed child or children,” a memorandum signed by Undersecretary of Defense Gilbert R. Cisneros Jr., stated. “Unit commanders must balance the needs of the unit with the needs of the member to maximize opportunity to use parental leave.”

The expansion was made in accordance with DTM 23-001 and the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022. Members who were on maternity convalescent leave or caregiver leave on 27 December (before the new policy went into effect) and had not used up their leave will transition to leave under the new policy without any loss of benefit and will receive the expanded benefit, DoD said.
