Seeking to restore peace following riots that plagued Ferguson, Mo., Gov. Jay Nixon ordered the state National Guard to move into the area. “As long as there are vandals and looters and threats to the people and property of Ferguson, we must take action to protect our citizens,” Nixon stated Aug. 18. He emphasized that the Guard troops would assume a “limited” role, and answer to the chief of the Missouri state highway patrol. The unrest ignited in response to the shooting death of Michael Brown, a young African American male, by heavily armed local police.
