More outgoing service members should take part in the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) before they hang up the uniform, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) recommended.
In a recent report, GAO noted that 25 percent of all separating service members who could have benefitted from the advice TAP provides did not attend a mandatory two-day class. Further, the report stated, most did not start the required program one year before leaving the military.
“DoD [the Defense Department] collects data on class attendance and the timing of participation, but doesn’t fully use it to inform program decisions or improve attendance. We recommend it do so,” the report stated.
