The Navy Family Support Group changed its name to the Family Readiness Group (FRG) Oct. 20, during a ceremony at the Family Support Center at Smokey Point, Wash. OPNAVINST 1754.5 officially changed the name of the organization to FRG and slightly altered its role to one of readiness for deployment. “This instruction changed the group’s emphasis and provided more guidance,” said spokesman Peter Harris at Smokey Point. FRGs are command-sponsored organizations which may operate on Department of Defense installations. The organization’s goals are to offer family members the opportunity to participate in programs that will help them cope with extended deployments and provide service members at sea the peace of mind that families are being supported at home. The groups consist of spouses, parents, siblings, relatives and approved friends of military personnel. They are generally organized through a unit before a deployment.
