The Navy has announced a new Naval Expeditionary Medicine Warfighter Development Center (NEMWDC) during a ceremony at Camp Pendleton, California, earlier this month.

The service described the action, in which the new command replaces the Naval Expeditionary Medical Training Institute, as a significant shift in the way combat-related trauma is treated.

“This transformation represents more than a change in name; it marks the continued evolution of Navy medicine’s mission to support the warfighter, strengthen our operational capabilities, and provide unmatched medical expertise both in garrison and in forward-deployed locations,” said Rear Adm. Guido Valdes, commander of Naval Medical Forces Pacific.

The change entails making the new entity an echelon 4 command, giving it greater capacity and access to resources and enhancing its role in supporting warfighters. Unit-level training, enhancement of combat trauma skills and certification on expeditionary medical platforms each will fall under its umbrella.

“The impact of this change will resonate across Navy medicine and serve to amplify our role in ensuring that medical forces are ready and fully equipped to support any mission, anytime, anywhere,” Valdes said.

Commanding officer Capt. Kevin Bailey described NEMWDC as “a unique gem in Navy medicine,” adding that it would serve as “the focal point for unit-level training leading to basic phase certification of expeditionary medicine.”

Under the new arrangement, training of personnel will focus on seamless care and lifesaving support as wounded troops are moved from the front to advanced medical facilities.
