Every year, USU converts the nearly 400 foot-long anatomy lab into a makeshift book distribution center to issue more than $800,000 worth of books and supplies to new SOM students. In addition to students’ tuition costs, books and supplies are federally funded at no cost to the students. The university is the nation’s federal health professions academy. The mission of USU is to educate, train and prepare uniformed services health professionals, officers and leaders to directly support the Military Health System, the National Security and National Defense Strategies of the U.S., and the readiness of the Armed Forces. Qualified enlisted sailors could prepare for medical school at the Navy’s expense, under a plan the service is offering.

Under the Enlisted to Medical Degree Preparatory Training Program, sailors would complete a two-year undergraduate program. Upon completion, they should then be in a position to compete for acceptance into U.S. medical schools.

The Navy is conducting the program in collaboration with the Bethesda, Maryland-based Uniformed Services University for the Health Sciences (USUHS), where the training would take place. The course work during the two years should prove to be intensive, with a focus on necessary preparation and mentoring.

Selectees would continue to be paid while earning allowances, benefits and privileges while taking the course. Books, tuition and labs would be covered for the duration.

While the program is open to all ratings, enlisted sailors in nuclear training command or who hold a nuclear Navy enlisted classification would have to get a conditional release from their field of duty in order to be considered.

The deadline for applications for fiscal year 2025 (Oct. 1, 2024-Sept. 30, 2025) is Sept. 30. Application requirements are available online at https://medschool.usuhs.edu/academics/emdp2.
