The Navy is planning to block-buy four new amphibious warfare ships. Seapower magazine reported that the block will include one America-class amphibious assault ship (LHA) and three San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ships (LPD). Two of the LPDs will be purchased in fiscal years 2025 and 2027, with another to come in fiscal ’29. The LHA will come in fiscal ’27 as well.

Sen. Roger Wicker, R.-Mississippi, hailed the move, stating it would save taxpayers “nearly $1 billion through additional efficiencies” because the multiple purchase will “provide stability for the industrial base on key shipbuilding programs.”

The block-buy approach would provide both “the predictable funding that our suppliers urgently need,” as well as stability for more than 650 companies in 39 states, said Paul Roden, the chairman of the Amphibious Warfare Industrial Base Council.
