The Navy is planning to completely defuel the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage facility on Joint Base Hickam-Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, by the end of 2024. A Navy document released by the Hawaii Department of Environmental Health indicated that safety concerns dictated that the projected date is the earliest for possible resolution of the problem. The document added that contingencies could push the target date further to the right.
The service is working with Hawaii health officials and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to develop and refine a suitable plan to remove the fuel at the site, where human error led to 20,000 gallons of it leaching into the water system that serves the base last year.
