The Navy is the latest service to update its parental leave policy, in accordance with the recent change in the law. Sailors who become parents through birth, adoption or long-term foster care now qualify for 12 weeks’ leave. The change applies to active-duty and reserve-component personnel.
The leave must be taken within one year of the child’s birth, adoption or placement. The leave can be taken in one continuous period or broken up into increments. In cases where deployments render leave-taking within a year impossible or impractical, commanders can extend the leave period accordingly.
The change applies to dual-service couples as well. Each are authorized to take the 12 weeks of leave.
