From now on, the Space Force will conduct its operations under a mantra. Officials and members alike believe the service’s new mission statement – “secure our nation’s interests in, from and to space,” provides a clear vision of what guardians do and why they do it.
“We did not hire a corporate marketing team to develop a catch phrase. Nor did generals sit around a table at the Pentagon debating what the statement should be,” said Chief of Space Operations Gen. Chance Saltzman. “Our mission statement was sourced from a guardian-driven process.”
This included asking the ranks to provide input, which resulted in 135 responses from both units and individuals in uniform.
The service offered further details. The mission in space entails establishing and maintaining space superiority that would protect the force and the nation as a whole from threats. Guardians would deliver satellite communications, positioning, navigation and timing, and missile-warning activities from space. Access to space via the Space Force’s launch, range and control infrastructure would be vigorously maintained.
“Our mission statement is a call to action that concisely encapsulates our purpose and identity as guardians and members of the profession of arms,” Saltzman said.
