By: FEDweek StaffPregnant sailors can get maternity uniforms that fit properly, under a pilot program now underway. The Navy Exchange Service Command (NEXCOM) will handle inventory, tailoring and mailing of uniform items under the Maternity Pilot Program, and will take care of returns and re-issues as well.
Sailors who are picked to take part in the pilot would bring their maternity uniform size sheet to the nearest NEXCOM uniform shop, where they will get help determining the precise sizes they would need. Women who do not live near a Navy exchange can watch a video that describes how to correctly measure a uniform for proper fit. To view the video, they should visit https://vimeo/com/6469457235. Army, Air Force and Marine Corps uniform centers also can provide help.
Once a pregnant sailor approves NEXCOM’s handling of her participation, the exchange has the proper measurements, and the Navy Uniform Matters Office receives a completed measurement form, the exchange will provide her with a full seabag of maternity uniforms. Each will have sewn-on embroidery for working uniforms, and rank insignia for enlisted E1-E6 dress uniforms. Hemming and shipping will be free.
Once their pregnancy is complete, sailors would return the uniforms to NEXCOM’s Southeast Distribution Center at no cost. The center would then prepare the uniforms for potential re-issue to other pregnant sailors who participate in the program.
The pilot will continue through Sept. 30, 2026.
