The process of removing Confederate names from military installations continues with the renaming of Fort Benning, now Fort Moore. The change took place during a May 11 ceremony at the Georgia installation. The new moniker honors Lt. Gen. Harold Moore and his wife, Julia Moore – in recognition of their lifelong dedication to soldiers and their families.
“Together, Hal and Julie Moore embody the very best of our military and the very best of our nation,” Maj. Gen. Curtis A. Buzzard, commanding general of the Maneuver Center of Excellence and Fort Moore, said during the ceremony. “They were dedicated to their country, committed to their family, and inspired generations of soldiers to follow in their footsteps.”
The couple’s ties with the post date back to the mid-1960s, when Moore commanded the 7th Cavalry Regiment. Moore and Joseph Galloway went on to collaborate on a book about the battle of Landing Zone X-Ray in Vietnam’s Ia Drang Valley, which pitted U.S. soldiers against a force far greater in number. Under Moore’s leadership, the outmanned cadre prevailed. The story later inspired the movie “We Were Soldiers.”
“We believe the redesignation of Fort Benning is unique in that, by Hal and Julie Moore’s example, the Army continues to recognize Army families as essential to Army readiness and mission accomplishment,” said David Moore, their son, during the ceremony.
