President Obama took a stand July 7 in support of the budget he submitted to Congress, which he said would not trade off “our long-term requirements for new technologies, for readiness.” Speaking to news media at a Pentagon press conference, Obama also promised that service members “are going to get paid,” even as disagreements over the budget between the White House and Congress persist. He likely will veto the present version of the 2016 defense-spending bill that the House and Senate have approved. “We’re not going to eat our seed corn by devoting too much money on things we don’t need now and robbing ourselves of the capacity to make sure that we’re prepared for future threats,” Obama said.
