With the new year, certain provisions aimed at improving the quality of life for families have taken effect. The National Military Family Association (NMFA) outlined several key changes:
· All service members are getting a 5.2-percent increase in basic pay.
· Junior enlisteds – in pay grades E-6 and below – could qualify for an award of a percentage of their pay when “prevailing economic conditions may adversely affect an eligible member.”
· The Family Separation Allowance – additional monthly pay for service members when their families cannot live close to them – is increased to $400 from $250 – the highest in more than 20 years.
· The Overseas COLA (cost-of-living adjustment) can no longer be subject to budgetary fluctuations more than twice a year or when connected to permanent-change-of-station (PCS) moves.
· Commissaries were funded at $1.48 billion – another record.
· Remarried surviving spouses now have commissary, exchange and MWR (morale, welfare and recreation) privileges.
