The total population of service members, dependents, and workforce on Guam would rise by more than 30,000 under plans to relocate Marines there from Okinawa and home-port an aircraft carrier strike group, according to a Defense Department environmental impact statement. The Marines would see the biggest gain, bringing in 21,262 uniformed members, dependents, and workers. Another 7,222 sailors, stationed on the ships, would also “be there at any given time” depending upon deployments, the report stated. The Army would bring in 630 soldiers and 950 dependents as well, to serve on missile defense sites. Guam is already home to both a naval station and Anderson Air Force Base.
