Troops someday could be able to perform better, and veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other maladies could show marked improvement, because of a study conducted jointly by the Office of Naval Research and the Catholic University Medical School in Rome. In the study, mice were outfitted with small electrodes on their scalp, which delivered short bursts of very low electrical current. Researchers noted that mice reacted to the stimuli by demonstrating enhanced intellectual and cognitive capabilities. Scientists also were able to identify the molecular trigger that produced the desired result.
