Scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research have successfully tested a vaccine against the lethal Zika virus. The test used mice as subjects. The team will conduct further tests on monkeys and hopes to move to human testing later this year, under the auspices of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases and with the cooperation of Harvard Medical School. A timetable for distribution among human patients is still to be determined. Zika virus is spread by mosquitoes and causes serious illness among those it infects, as well as birth defects.
